ABOUT US

The Foundation Against Crime Victim Exploitation in Social Media (a/k/a "FACES") is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to assisting crime victims who are experiencing exploitation in social media. We are committed to providing support, resources and advocacy to those who have experienced digital exploitation. We also conduct research to identify and track trends and issues in social media that impact crime victims, and we plan to create an archive of victim accounts. We seek to not only empower victims and raise awareness about the impact of social media exploitation on crime victims, but we also seek to collaborate with content creators who would like to provide more victim-centered content.  Through our work, we aim to create a safer online environment and promote digital wellness.

OUR MISSION

At The Foundation Against Crime Victim Exploitation in Social Media, we believe in the principle "Be Well R.E.A.D."

R- RESEARCH

We identify and research trends, issues and activities in social media that impact crime victims. We develop documents that may include articles, advocacy materials, position papers, journal material, social media posts and more, that highlight these areas.

E- EDUCATION

We provide education and public awareness about victims' rights, with an emphasis on social media.

A- ADVOCACY

Advocacy for Change/Awareness:

We provide advocacy to promote awareness and understanding of how social media coverage of criminal cases and victims is, or can be exploitative and abusive. These advocacy efforts reflect our endorsement of Julie Murray's "Engage With Empathy" campaign* when covering criminal cases and missing persons cases in social media.

Advocacy and Support for Victims:

We provide advocacy and support for crime victims, their families and loved ones who are, or have been, subject to social media exploitation and/or abuse.

D- DOCUMENTATION OF ABUSE

In order to document the abuse of victims in social media, we are creating an archive of first-person accounts. These accounts are designed to substantiate crime victim abuses stemming from social media. These firsthand accounts will serve various potential uses, including but not limited to: understanding the nature and extent of harm; identification of how crime victim abuse in social media arises; and the development of practical, legal and/or legislative solutions aimed at minimizing and preventing such harms. When deemed appropriate, this collection may also assist other victims, advocates, legislators, victims' rights attorneys, academics and/or others authentically engaged in the study and research of crime victim abuse in social media.

* The Engage With Empathy Campaign seeks to unite survivors of true crime, supporters and content creators in the ethical, responsible, and victim-centered coverage of true crime cases. We urge you to learn more about this campaign, as well as get firsthand, accurate information about Julie's still missing sister, Maura Murray, at the official family-created website, at  https://www.mauramurraymissing.org
